How We Built a Fast, Low-Cost App for Finding and Claiming Obituaries

The Obituary App's Memorial Search Platform

The Objective

The Obituary App’s users were searching for memorial notices at the hardest possible moment, through slow newspapers and subscription paywalls charging grieving families for access. We built a web and mobile platform with search returning in 0.3 seconds, city based listings across more than 10 US markets, and free posting and claiming with moderated content. Over 10,000 downloads, with 100 obituaries posted and claimed daily. An afternoon of hunting became a three second search.

A Simpler Way to Find an Obituary at a Hard Time

The Obituary App is a US-based platform for finding, posting, and claiming obituaries across web and mobile. It focuses on the cities where people are actually searching, offering instant access to memorial information as a straightforward alternative to newspapers and costly subscription services.

They wanted an affordable, low-stress way to find and claim obituaries, one that replaced outdated newspapers and expensive services with something fast and simple.

The Problem

Finding an Obituary Was Slow, Costly, and Poorly Timed

Finding an obituary has never been easy, and it tends to be hardest exactly when it matters most. The traditional route runs through newspapers, which are slow to search and increasingly out of step with how people find anything else. The online alternatives often sit behind paid subscriptions, charging for access at a moment when a grieving family is least inclined to navigate a paywall.

Speed was a real part of the problem. Searching obituaries the old way was time-consuming, and time spent hunting through slow services is time a family doesn’t want to spend. Cost was the next barrier. Many online obituary services required costly subscriptions simply to view information, putting a price on something families needed access to during a difficult time.

Accessibility mattered just as much. Traditional ways of finding obituaries were neither convenient nor easy to reach for people used to doing everything from a phone. Underneath it all was the emotional weight of the moment, which meant the experience had to be gentle and simple at every step.

Our Approach

We Built Around the Person Searching at a Difficult Moment

We started from who uses this and when. Someone searching for an obituary is usually doing it under emotional strain, and needs an answer quickly without cost getting in the way. Finding, posting, and claiming are one simple need, met gently.

We worked through that experience with The Obituary App team: what a person needs to search across cities in a few taps, find a notice fast, and claim a memorial without a subscription. Speed, affordability, and simplicity were the point of the build from the start.

Fast Obituary Search

We built a search that returns results in about a third of a second, so finding a notice takes seconds. For someone searching at a hard time, that speed is the difference between relief and frustration.

Low-Cost, Accessible Access

We built the platform as a free or low-cost alternative to paid subscription services, available on both web and mobile. The paywall that used to sit between families and memorial information is gone.

City-Based Coverage

We built the platform around the specific cities where people are searching, so the listings that matter locally are the ones surfaced. A user finds obituaries relevant to where they are in a few simple taps.

Simple Posting & Claiming

We built posting, finding, and claiming into one straightforward flow, so a family can put up a notice or claim a memorial without friction.

How It Was Built

Fast Search on a Simple Foundation

Search speed was a priority from the start, engineered so results come back in about a third of a second. For a product where a slow search adds friction to an already stressful moment, that responsiveness shaped how the search and data layers were built from the beginning.

We built web and mobile on shared cloud infrastructure so the experience stayed consistent wherever someone searched, and so listings and updates were monitored and approved before going live. For a platform holding memorial information, that oversight kept the content accurate and respectful.

Throughout the four-month build, we kept The Obituary App team close to the work. A product used by families at a difficult time has to feel considered in every interaction, and decisions made without attention to that weight tend to feel wrong in use.

Outcome

One App. Every City Served. Found in Seconds.

The Obituary App has passed 10,000 downloads, serving more than 10 key cities with over 100 obituaries posted and claimed every day. People find and claim a notice in one place, in seconds, without a newspaper or a paid subscription standing in the way.

Search returns results in about a third of a second, turning what used to be a slow, frustrating hunt into something quick and simple at a moment when that matters most. More cities, more listings, and more users extend the same foundation from here.

Testimonials
